The Boyfriend Sweater
The Boyfriend Sweater is a true classic; it is extremely comfortable and not at all fussy!
This sweater is meant to be comfortable and float over your body shape, however, you may decide how tight or loose you want the sweater to be by selecting the ease you want added to your measurements. I recommend 3 inches for a loose fit.
You will need to take the following measurements for your custom pattern when you generate the custom pattern:
- Lower edge width
- Length from the lower edge of the sweater to the underarm
The original design was created in a gauge of 5.5 stitches and 7 rows per inch in stockinette. However, you can select a yarn from fingering to aran weight if you’d like. Just make sure that you have knit an accurate gauge swatch in the yarn you will be using.
Yarn Yardage Requirements
While we would like to offer a simple yarn estimate in our custom patterns, however, the amount of yarn you will need will depend on choices you make like whether to make the garment a cropped or tunic length. We've anticipated that, and we have created charts that allow you to estimate yarn needed based on your choice of weight as well as length. Please refer to our yarn estimation charts and read the article for helpful hints on how to estimate the amount of yarn you will need.
Notions
24" or 32" circular needles in the size used to obtain gauge
2 stitch markers
To measure a proper gauge, cast on 40 stitches using the needle size recommended for the yarn. Knit in Stockinette for at least 4 inches. Take swatch off the needles, lay it flat and measure in the center towards the top of the swatch. Knit using suggested needles first. Adjust needle size until you have a swatch that feels soft and drapey without being too loose.
